The Public Studio is a space - virtual, figurative and every once in a while, literal - which is devoted to the practice and art of film, video and sometimes live performance work.
The definition of our devotion is plural: our exploration embraces visual and text-based storytelling - practical, aesthetic, reflective - and also the experience of artworks across mediums; it discusses performance, poetry, technique, politics, practice, narrative, semiotics and sometimes even yes, the inexplicably sublime.
We make art and think about art and talk about art. We're experimentalists first and foremost and TPS is the limb of our storytelling practice that allows us to take big risks and collaborate in ways that don't necessarily fall neatly under a traditional filmmaking industry banner.
The other limb is Find & Replace Films. It's our production company for explorations narrative and or more strictly speaking - cinematic film practice.
These are two sister practices that inform and drive one another. And yes - sometimes their work happily overlaps.
At TPS (and Find & Replace) we are curious artists as well as curious and ambitious producers. We are works-in-progress and always will be.
Feel free to get in touch with us, any time.

Ming-Zhu Hii co-helms The Public Studio and Find & Replace Films. Her role more or less approximates that of creative director (but disclaimer: formal terms are pretty nebulous around here). She is a director, writer, actor, producer, and voiceover artist. While her work spans a broad expanse of practices, it is drawn together by her consummate preoccupation with difficult questions, strong aesthetics, poetic storytelling and the constant interrogation of the status quo.
Nicholas Coghlan co-helms The Public Studio and Find & Replace Films, and his role more or less approximates lead creative producer, and key dramaturg (see above disclaimer). Alongside filmmaking, his passion for storytelling is also expressed through his work as a highly regarded actor in the Australian film and television industry, as a writer, dramaturg, and one of the country's leading drama and performance trainers.
